Checking for a Warrant in Kittson County
A Kittson County warrant check means asking three offices, since no single one holds the full answer. The state's public case search shows only a slice of District Court activity, not a warrant index. Court Administration keeps the case file and its orders. The Sheriff's Office handles service and custody on the same case.
The county's Court Administration page lists arrest-warrant preparation among its duties.
That line marks where the court side of a Kittson warrant starts.
- Gather a full legal name, any prior name, date of birth, citation number, and court file number.
- Search state case records by exact case number or citation number.
- Read the result as a case record: filings, any failure-to-appear notation, next hearing.
- Call Court Administration at 218-843-3632 about warrant type, status, and hearing.
- Call the Sheriff's Office and Jail at 218-843-3535 about service, custody, and surrender.
Note: a name search that returns nothing does not prove a Kittson County warrant is absent, since one can be sealed, unserved, or filed in another court file.
Why Kittson County Publishes No Warrant List
Kittson County's official Sheriff's page is a contact page. It names the current sheriff, lists the jail number, and gives visiting hours. It links no warrant search, most-wanted roster, or records portal. With no roster to read, confirmation comes from a phone call and, if needed, a written request.
One courthouse and one sheriff's office handle every question here.
The Case Search Is Not a Warrant Certificate
Minnesota Court Records Online is a public case search, and it says so itself. Results are not the official court record, and the Judicial Branch does not certify them. The site also warns of errors and omissions. Minnesota Rule of Public Access 8 adds a second limit: pending criminal matters are kept out of ordinary name searches, so a case may be findable by number yet invisible by name. Note: only Court Administration or the Sheriff's Office can confirm whether a Kittson County warrant is still active today.
Kittson County Warrant Types
Minnesota uses one District Court for criminal, traffic, juvenile, family, and city-ordinance matters. Every Kittson County warrant, whatever its type, runs through that single court system.
| Warrant Type | How It Arises | Who Issues It |
|---|---|---|
| Arrest warrant | Probable cause that an offense was committed | District Court judge |
| Bench warrant | A missed hearing, plea, or sentencing date | District Court judge |
| Traffic warrant | An unpaid citation or a missed traffic date | District Court judge |
| Sign-and-release warrant | A missed appearance in a qualifying misdemeanor case | District Court, per Minn. Stat. §629.415 |
| Search warrant | Probable cause to search for evidence | District Court judge |
| Federal or out-of-state warrant | Charges filed outside Kittson County | That court, not Kittson County |
An arrest warrant starts with a new accusation. A bench warrant starts with something you were ordered to do and did not finish. A Kittson County traffic warrant falls on the bench side when a citation goes unanswered.
Minnesota Case Numbers Behind a Kittson Warrant
A Minnesota court file number opens with a two-digit county code, then case-type letters, then a two-digit filing year and a sequence number. Kittson is county code 35. A file might read 35-CR-YY-NNN. CR generally marks a case with a mandatory court appearance, and VB generally marks a payable case. A citation carries its own 12-digit preprinted number.
- Active or outstanding
- A warrant not yet served, recalled, quashed, or inactivated.
- Served or executed
- The warrant has been carried out, or the person is in the process.
- Recalled or inactivated
- The issuing court has withdrawn the warrant's active effect.
- Sign-and-release warrant
- A missed-appearance warrant requiring notice and release, not arrest, when the statute applies.
Inside a Kittson County Warrant Record

|---|---|
| Subject | The person named, or a description certain enough to identify that person |
| Offense and level | The charge, with its felony, gross-misdemeanor, misdemeanor, or petty level |
| Issuing judge and court | Kittson County District Court, with signature and issue date |
| Bail and conditions | The amount and conditions set, or a no-bail designation |
| Status | Active, served, recalled, quashed, or sign-and-release |
Read the case number and status first.

When a phone call cannot settle a question, the county's Information Disclosure Request is the formal path, and requests may go by mail, email, or fax. Name the case or citation, the office holding the data, and the items you want: warrant type, status, issuing court, hearing date, and public bail information. Inspection is free. Inside the 1965 Kittson County Courthouse
The courthouse has moved twice without leaving Hallock. The first court term met at Hotel Hallock in 1881. The current Kittson County building opened in 1965, a low horizontal design by Wells Denbrook of Grand Forks. The ground slopes, so the building reads as one story from one side and two from the other. Court Administration sits on the upper level in Suite 204, and weekday hours run 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The District Court page carries the address, weekday hours, and parking note.

Why an Unserved Warrant Stays Confidential
Not every warrant is public yet. Arrest-warrant-index data are confidential until the person is taken into custody, served, or appears before the court. Minnesota Rule of Criminal Procedure 33 lets a court restrict arrest documents when disclosure could cause flight, defeat execution, or hamper an investigation. A blank Kittson County search is not evidence of anything.
If You Have a Warrant in Kittson County
Statewide guidance says the sheriff in the charging county may help clear a warrant. The charging county's court is the other route. It also warns that appearing in person can lead to custody, so weigh that before you walk into a Kittson County courtroom.
Important: talk to a lawyer before turning yourself in. Being stopped, or appearing in person, with an active warrant can lead to arrest and booking.
- Identify the issuing Kittson case by case number with Court Administration at 218-843-3632.
- Ask whether the warrant is arrest-authorizing, sign-and-release, served, or recalled.
- Call the Sheriff's Office and Jail at 218-843-3535 about surrender, hours, and booking before you go.
- Ask an attorney about a hearing or recall motion. The Ninth District Public Defender in Crookston is at 218-281-6065.
- Attend the new hearing and fix the underlying case, then confirm the status with both offices.
Traffic Debt, License Holds, and Warrants
One citation can create three separate problems in Kittson County, and paying it off does not fix the rest. Minnesota's Pay Fines page sets the deadline: pay or schedule an appearance within 30 days from the date the citation is filed. Paying a fine counts as a guilty plea for that citation. Eligible payable citations can be handled online, by automated phone, by mail, or in person. A $50 monthly plan is also available. Choose the payment path early, before a warrant enters the picture.
| Problem | Who controls it | What resolves it |
|---|---|---|
| Fine and late penalties | Court Payment Center | Payment or an approved plan |
| Traffic warrant | District Court judge | Appearance, bond, or a recall |
| License suspension | Driver and Vehicle Services | Court-reported compliance plus any fee |
Note: paying a fine does not automatically lift a Kittson County warrant, so ask Court Administration to confirm the case status after the payment posts.
Kittson County Warrant Records and Public Access
Minnesota presumes government data are public unless a law classifies them otherwise. Court records in Kittson County follow their own access rules on top of that.
Key Rules:
Minn. Stat. §13.03 - government data are public unless classified otherwise, inspection is free, and a denial must cite its legal authority.
Kittson County Data Practices Policy - arrest-warrant-index data stay confidential until custody, service, or a court appearance.
Minn. R. Public Access 8 - pending criminal matters are limited in remote name searching, and private identifiers are withheld.
Minn. Stat. §260B.171 - juvenile court records carry their own confidentiality limits.
Ask for inspection before copies.
